In 1970, when it was first designed, synths were just starting to become popular instruments. Mini MoogĪrguably the synth that started it all - the classic that put Moog on the musical map forever. In case you haven’t heard, Moog just announced that they will be reissuing their classic MiniMoog Model D Synth, and they’ve even started production on it during their Durham-based festival Moogfest! That being said, there are some synths that have shimmered through the noise, so to speak, and have distinguished themselves as true, influential classics. In this piece, I’ll take you through some of those, and explain just what’s so special about each of them.
So caveat emptor: This list is subjective! Obviously, any article written about the synthesizer is going to be subjective there’s no way around the fact that certain sounds sound better or worse to different ears. Well, the answer is complex: many people have fallen in love with the arpeggiators on Junos others, the sound of several stacked analog signal paths. And the color scheme is far more period accurate. The backlit blue buttons and touchstrips are gone. Just one look at the JU-06A next to the original JU-06 and you can see that Roland put a lot more effort into faithfully paying tribute to their musical inspiration. The arpeggiator and sequencer have been given a major upgrade. The number of vintage synths it pays tribute to has been doubled.
The JU-06A takes everything that made the JU-06 so compelling, and dials it up a notch. It's also no surprise that it's the first entry in the Boutique line to get a sequel. It's no surprise then that one of the first entries in Roland's portable Boutique series attempted to emulate the classic Juno-106. They were (at the time) reasonably priced polyphonic synths that found their way into studios with the Cure, Madonna, A-ha, Duran Duran.
But just as important was Roland's Juno line of analog synths. There are a few instruments that really defined the sound of the 80s: The Yamaha DX7 and the gated snare chief among them.
